Review: Circus Oz – NEON

Ever wanted to see a circus troupe embracing the neon drenched, spandex, and Walkman world of the 80’s? Look no further than Circus Oz: NEON.

The Melba Spiegeltent is the perfect venue for a show like this, an almost mystical tent nestled away in the backstreets of Collingwood, the colourful decoration an alluring beckon to any unsuspecting passer-by. Those that choose to enter are greeted to an almost cosy setting; a small stage nestled in the front of the crowd.

The oncoming show is a bizarre and brilliant blend of cabaret, comedy and circus. Neon colours blazed across the spandex workout gear that the majority of the performers wear throughout consume the entirety of the act. The premise seems both hilarious and ridiculous at the beginning, as the performers take to the stage in a highly dramatized workout routine. This simple act is quickly overtaken with gasps from the audience as one of the performers is suddenly thrown throughout the air with apparent ease.

The rest of the show continues with the same theme – dramatised scenes with 80’s style origins (all accompanied with the most amazing costumes that any one could imagine seeing) with some breathtaking acrobatics and talents displayed around the performance space. While all the performers are absolutely fantastic throughout – special mention must go to the MC of the evening, Geraldine Quinn. Quinn amuses and entertains the audience throughout – from anything from jokes, banter or absolutely belting out some classic songs of the past years.

Circus Oz: NEON should be on everyone’s must see list for the 2019 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. There may be no better Saturday night spent than sitting with a drink and watching the rainbow brilliance of Circus Oz: NEON.

Circus Oz: NEON is showing at The Melba Spiegeltent from 12thApril – 20th April as part of the 2019 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Tickets can be purchased here.
