Review: Becky Lucas – Um, Support Me?!

Queen of the Australian Millennials* Becky Lucas is at it again. After another hugely successful year, having performed at the Sydney Opera House as part of the exclusive Just For Laughs Festival, done the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala, made a pilot for the ABC and written a number of sketches for Comedy Central, Lucas has #blessed us with a brand new hour of stand up in Um, Support Me?!

Um, Support Me?! is 55 minutes of rapid-fire jokes on relatable topics. There’s no through-line, no sad personal revelation at the 45 minute mark. It’s just jokes. There’s a lot of discussion of everyone’s favourite place to hang out, the internet – from trying to navigate online social spaces, to navigating online dating, to navigating Twitter’s Rules of Service. The 45 year old men in the audience might not exactly ‘get it’, but they’re still laughing. Everyone in the audience is always laughing.

The me-centrism implied by the title does feature in the show, but it’s very tongue-in-cheek. The ego Lucas has is no greater than any of her male peers, and she’s earns her brash confidence within the first ten minutes of being on stage. Lucas plays with both insecurity and confidence, flicking between them to benefit her punchlines and win her audience over no matter how outrageous what she’s saying might be. She’ll often hang back until she’s sure you’re already laughing before delivering a final killer line. It’s intensely delivered snark. Um, Support Me?! is irreverent, silly, slightly narcissistic fun.

*Editors note: big call, we know, but as millennials we’ve done the maths and it checks out.

Um, Support Me?! is on until 21 April as part of the 2019 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. For show times, venue details and tickets visit the MICF website.
