Melbourne is such a hub of amazing emerging theatre, sometimes it can be hard to know exactly what to go to next. Luckily, Poppy Seed Theatre Festival is back with a carefully curated pick of the bunch. Now in its third year, the 2017 Festival program is a diverse showcase of some of Melbourne’s best new theatre.

This year’s shows include Alexithymia, a play from the perspective of young autistic women, Romeo is Not the Only Fruit, a queer take-back of the tired old ‘dead gay’ trope, Bread Crumbs, a grim reimagining of Hansel & Gretel as children facing a violent home life in suburban Melbourne, Daniel Keene’s Lost: 5, a series of monologues addressing the severity and complexity of homelessness, and Tandem, a wild interactive circus performance from the Gravity Dolls duo.

Spanning such a wide range of important issues through a variety of theatrical mediums, the Festival continues to work with local councils to support writers, artists, directors, actors and producers to help foster the next wave of Australian theatre makers.

Poppy Seed Theatre Festival runs from 8 November until 9 December 2017 at a range of venues across Melbourne.
