On Childhood Favourites

We all have those shows and movies we loved to death when we were younger. Whether it’s a VHS you watched until it broke, the first film you watched in cinema, or before and/or after school cartoons, everyone had favourites.

The problem, of course, is that sometimes things that kids love are not really that great. Some things are! Adventure Time, My Little Pony and the Regular Show are all modern cartoons that are also awesome. Other things are not.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been watching some old stuff. And I don’t mean from a few years ago – I went all the way back to 1988. Okay, so I wasn’t alive in 1988, but my parents did buy me and my sister the VHS of Land Before Time, and we watched that enough that it almost broke.

In 2013, The Land Before Time is still awesome. I won’t go into detail, but suffice to say that if you haven’t watched it since you were young, rewatch it. You won’t regret it! James Horner’s score is magnificent, and the film is still heartwrenching.

The Land Before Time
No, I totally did not bawl my eyes out when Little Foot’s mother dies.

On the flip side, there are films and TV shows that we love when we’re young, when they’re actually not brilliant.

Not to name names, but I also recently rewatched Anastasia, and it could be better. Obviously aside from the historical issues (I may have spent the early part of my life believing that Rasputin was in fact an evil magician who sold his soul to the devil, and that Anastasia did survive and the Russian royal family was the bestest!), it just wasn’t as good as I remembered it to be.

In any case, childhood favourites are risky to rewatch. I recommend caution and an exhaustive pros and cons list before trying.

You have been warned.
