On the 26th of November, the Whitechapel Gallery unveils a new site-specific commission by the French Algerian artist Kader Attia. The work is a revisit of the biblical story of Jacobs Ladder, and will feature a floor to ceiling structure of rare artifacts and books that will fill the lofty spaces in the gallery.

The structure will include artefacts such as old scientific measuring devices and books by authors such as Descartes and Alfred Russel Wallace. The centre of the work will feature a light shining up to a mirrored ceiling. This will reflect Jacob’s story and his vision of angels ascending from earth to heaven.

Kader Attia’s (b. 1970) work will explore anthropology, politics and science, and are rooted in history and archival research. His other works explore concepts such as a sense of identity in an age of globilisation, and these works are influenced by his upbringing in Algerian and Parisian suburbs, and further enhanced by living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Venezuela.
