My favourite day of the year is coming up. It’s not Christmas, or my birthday, or even Easter (I swear to God chocolate eggs are tastier than regular chocolate). It’s Free Comic Book Day!
There are a lot of reasons that Free Comic Book Day is the greatest day of the year.
1. Free comic books.
This is the most obvious one. Free Comic Book Day provides us with a lot of comic books. There’s another great lineup this year, including children’s comic books, steampunk stuff, and of course, good old-fashioned superheroes. It’s a really good chance to check out some new stuff without actually forking out cash.
I make a list of books I want, because it can get hectic. It also makes it easier for everyone to not have someone hemming and hawing, holding everyone else up.
2. You can discover new places.
I found my favourite comic book store on FCBD two years ago. I was hitting up all the stores in the city, and they were the last store I got to. And they’re awesome! Check out the stores near you that do Free Comic Book Day at their website.
3. You can meet new people.
Sure, I’m crippled by social anxiety that makes speaking to new people feel like attempting armed robbery, or talking in class feel like running a marathon and then getting punched in the face. But for regular people, FCBD is a great way to interact with other comic book lovers. Comic book stores are generally filled with, surprise surprise, comic book lovers.
4. Meeting artists and authors.
Comic books aren’t created by faceless, far away artists and authors. They’re created by people that are on the whole, quite lovely. A lot of stores go all out and have tables of creative types eager to interact with fans new and old.
Plus, you can see what’s happening in the local comic book scene, and support local artists that you might usually pass over in favour of bigger titles.
5. It’s just fun. It depends on the store, but my favourite place does a costume contest, has treats (last year they had cake pops), and although it was very crowded, it was also very fun.
Something to remember is that stores put a lot of effort into organising the day. They don’t get the comics for free. So if you do go, consider buying something there. Maybe something you’d usually get off the internet, you dirty downloader. (Just kidding. Mostly.)
